Maddie's Portfolio
"Writing Through Building with Legos"

Welcome to my English Final Portfolio Project! This website explores the connections between my writing process throughout the quarter sequence assignments and building with Legos, while also showcasing my growth in writing!
Like many small humans, I grew up on Legos. As a Mechanical Engineering major, I think I can contribute my love for building and designing things from my childhood of playing with Legos. As I explored the different things I could make, I began to find my passion in designing and making new things. Much like building with Legos, writing is all about exploring new ideas, practicing through the process of revising and expressing yourself in fun and different ways!

When I first started learning to write, it was like stepping on Legos with bare feet, painful and frustrating, but overall I could continue with life afterward. Now that I have had more time to practice my writing, it is still like stepping on Legos, but now with socks. Instead of frustratingly forcing my way through, this class has helped to teach me valuable educational outcomes and helpful tricks to make the writing process or building process easier and more manageable. For example, having others look over my work and offer feedback or appreciating that it will take multiple drafts and ideas during the writing process that can change over time.
Throughout this project, I found numerous examples of how the writing stages can be showcased by the idea of building with Legos. Writing is a fluid and flexible process consisting of 3 main stages: Drafting, Peer Review and Revision. In each of the writing stages, I found process artifacts from each of the sequences to showcase my growth in writing. By being reflective in these stages, I was able to develop and find new ideas or ways to communicate effectively with our audience. In my reflection on the quarter as a whole, and the individual stages in my writing process, I will be discussing two important Educational Objectives from English 134:
E02: Practice a recursive writing process that includes drafting, peer review, revision and editing.
E03: Recognize that the writing process is necessary to the discovery, development, and clarification of ideas.

Sequence Assignments
English 134 is focused around 3 different sequences or main assignments:
Sequence 1 was a personal narrative centered around literacy growth and inner reflection on our personal thoughts and opinions about our own literacy. I had a lot of fun writing a lyrical, poetic essay about my battles with writing in my academic career.
Sequence 2 was profile on a person creating change withing our community. I got the pleasure to interview and write an essay about Eric Pulse, a machining teacher at Cal Poly.
Sequence 3 was a argumentative essay on a issue that impacted your community. I chose to research and discuss the differences in tuition between in-state and out-of-state students in California higher education schools.
